Vegetation along Roadways

Branches Obstructing Travel Lanes in Subdivisions

We are asking subdivision residents to please help keep over-hanging branches and other vegetation from impeding lines-of-site and obstructing travel lanes. Branches and vegetation should be trimmed-back (in the manner most acceptable to the resident), so that there is at least a 15-foot vertical clearance from the roadway and at least 2 feet of clearance from the edge of the pavement. If residents do not take care of this maintenance, then the Township will need to take care of it.

Every year, the Township trims back branches and other vegetation that are beginning to extend into the travel lanes of Township through streets. This is in addition to the roadside mowing that's done several times a year, in order to reduce the height of grass and other plants that are growing in the first several feet of the right-of-way. The right-of-way on some subdivision streets is now also becoming obstructed by overhanging branches and other vegetation.

New Maintenance Program Needed

In order to keep lines-of-site and travel lanes clear on subdivision streets, the Township will begin an ongoing program to ensure that trees, shrubs and other vegetation along subdivision streets are kept trimmed back. The first step will be for Township staff to check the various subdivision streets, as time permits, and decide which are in most immediate need of having tree branches and other vegetation trimmed back. Then residents along those streets will be asked to help perform the needed maintenance. Where residents don't take care of the necesary maintenance, the Township will do the needed trimming.

How Far Should Branches and Vegetation Be Trimmed Back?

Residents may do the needed trimming in the manner that they find most acceptable. We do ask that there be at least a 15-foot vertical clearance from the roadway and at least 2 feet of clearance from the edge of the pavement.
